Description
Dad’s friend Red Cloud Wolverton provided the magnificent horses for this shot, part of which was taken in Mendoza Canyon, Arizona.
Red and his crew made a temporary corral and horse chute out of orange construction fencing. To keep the horses bunched together, a rider directed the horses down the chute and toward Dad. At the last minute, the cowboy in the photo joined the fray to rope one of the white horses.
The horses quickly caught on to the plan and began taking their own shortcuts. Dad had only three chances to capture the action. Despite a little misbehavior by one of the white horses, Dad nailed his shot. Now he just needed a dramatic background to make it complete.
He found the perfect backdrop at the South Rim in Big Bend National Park. Dad blended the two images to create his own artistic slice of the Old West.
