Description
Winter in the mountains can be brutal. Dad wanted to capture those conditions for both man and beast on film. He traveled to his friend’s ranch near Grand Lake, Colorado for a very cold photo shoot.
After scouting the barn location, Dad was ready to shoot. He just had to wait until early the next morning.
The morning brought a few surprises that would certainly make the photograph feel real. Temperatures hovered near -10 degrees and 1-½ feet of snow fell during the night. Both Dad and the model wore layer upon layer of clothes trying to stay warm.
Dad and his assistant quickly rigged the fence light and the barn with strobes covered in warming gels. This would bring a tiny bit of warm color to the photo while the main hue would be a cool blue. That combined with the layer of fog his assistant laid down in the barn gave a very frosty feeling to the photo. Just before the sun rose, Dad captured this classic image of the Old West.
